How to make a masked Aadhaar

Updated 6 October 2026

A masked Aadhaar shows only the last 4 digits of your Aadhaar number — the first 8 are replaced with XXXX XXXX. Hotels, landlords, offices and many services only need to confirm who you are, so a masked copy is the safer one to share.

When to share a masked copy

Use it whenever someone just needs proof of identity or address: hotel check-in, rental agreements, office joining forms, SIM and gas connections. Share the full number only where it is really required, such as certain bank or government KYC.

Opening the e-Aadhaar PDF

The e-Aadhaar PDF is locked. The password is the first 4 letters of your name, as printed on Aadhaar, in CAPITALS, followed by your year of birth — for example RAVI1995. For short names like “Sai”, use the whole name: SAI2001.

What the tool changes

  • Finds the 12-digit Aadhaar number on every page and hides the first 8 digits.
  • Leaves the 16-digit Virtual ID (VID) as it is.
  • Rebuilds PDFs from images, so the hidden digits can’t be copied out of the file.
  • Doesn’t change the QR code — cover it too if you don’t want to share it.

Step by step

  1. Open the Aadhaar masking tool.
  2. Choose your e-Aadhaar PDF or a clear photo of the card.
  3. For the PDF, type the password (e.g. RAVI1995).
  4. Press “Mask the number” and download the masked copy.
  5. Open it and check the number shows as XXXX XXXX and four digits.
